Materials

big-iconPetal Intent

We are committed to not using materials that endanger the health of people or ecosystems in the construction, operation or maintenance of all infrastructure and community spaces.

We will document the content of all products used and subject our design team and contractor to a strict material control and validation system, in which manufacturers will be required to disclose the chemical content of manufacturing and contractors will be required to demonstrate the reduction of leftovers, wastes and unnecessary residues.

We will measure and quantify the total Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by each of our works, taking 2019 as a base year, including those generated by the design and administrative team when moving to our Development.

We will implement a permanent Integral Solid Waste Management Program, with the goal of preventing at least 90% of the waste generated in construction, operation and maintenance of the Development from reaching final disposal sites. To this end, we will promote circular economy and material recovery actions.

Petal Imperatives

Living Materials Plan

In order to ensure responsible use of materials over time, the Community will have a Materials Implementation Plan to meet the Living Building Challenge imperatives for all community facilities, common infrastructure, and land or waterscapes that the Community controls and is charged with developing.

Embodied Carbon Footprint

The Community shall account for the total embodied carbon impact (tCO2e) arising from the construction of all Community infrastructure (built or planned) and Community-owned facilities through a single calculation of carbon emissions within project boundaries, with a commitment to neutralize them through the purchase of carbon offsets in formal, regulated markets.

Net Positive Waste

The Community shall reduce or eliminate as much as possible the production of waste during the design, construction, operation and end-of-life of buildings and infrastructure in order to conserve natural resources and find ways to integrate waste into an industrial or natural nutrient loop.
